The wood inspires the design
Your requirement dictates build
Playability creates art squared
One of the coolest things a local builder like me can do for you, is create the guitar of your dreams - stepping outside the norm for materials, features, or design. Some of my favorite custom builds used materials that hold significance to the new owner.
It’s kind of how PPCG get started - we were forced to take down a huge White Ash tree in our yard due to the Ash Borer disease, and I couldn’t just saw it up for firewood, so I made myself a 5-string bass - which is my favorite bass to this day.
Soon after, I was able to craft a bass out of black walnut that was harvested off of Pat Niemisto’s farm many years go. There were a couple of slabs in his barn, and he asked me if I wanted them. Turned out to be beautiful wood, and the bass guitar I built for him is a family heirloom already.
Similarly, I used a World War II ammo box that my dad owned as guitar top - he used it to transport his camera gear home from Iwo Jima in 1945. It sat in his garage full of nails for most of my life, and when they were moving out of their house to reside in assisted living, he gave it to me, shared the story, and asked me to do something with it. Our local Veteran’s group raffled it off for a large donation, giving me great joy and creating a memorial for a veteran’s family at the same time.
Another friend was lamenting the loss (many years ago) of his favorite teenage guitar, so with photos and slab of ash, we recreated it, right down to the same pickups and finish. He tells me his kids are jousting about it already, wondering who gets it when that time comes. I guess we ought to do another one!
Think about wood from a family dwelling, stones gathered by loved ones, a piece of a tree you loved, or even some custom artwork or painting - making it far more than a guitar - it’s playable artwork that your family will always cherish.
